The why before the what

Brand foundation.
The why before the what.

A. Positioning
B. Attributes
C. What we are not
D. Aspirational peers

Every visual and verbal decision in this book is derived from the positioning, attributes, and audience defined here. When two rules conflict, return to this chapter.

1.1 — Positioning

Yummy Future is a robotic platform for the food and beverage industry. We start in specialty beverage — coffee, matcha, tea, cold-brew — because that is where manipulation complexity, customer demand, and unit economics converge first. The platform architecture is designed to extend into every sector of F&B where a trained human currently bottlenecks quality and throughput.

1.2 — Attributes, weighted

When two attributes pull in opposite directions, the higher-ranked one wins.

01 — PreciseEngineered, not hand-drawn. Generous whitespace, considered typography, real numbers — never adjectives where a measurement will do.
02 — WarmPrecision without warmth reads cold-vending. The Ignite accent, the human moments in photography, the imperfect prose — every system element keeps the brand human.
03 — Future-facingInevitable, not novel. The brand looks like a category that already exists, not a startup arguing for one.
04 — UnpretentiousNo Latin mottos, no faux-luxury, no hand-lettering. Our customers are tech workers and students — not connoisseurs.
05 — AmbitiousThis is a platform play, not a coffee shop. The brand should look like it could power a thousand storefronts.

1.3 — What we are not

  • Not cold / industrial / vending-machine. Miso and Briggo are cautionary examples. Industrial restraint, yes — industrial coldness, no.
  • Not sci-fi or gadget-forward. The robot is the means, not the message. Hardware appears alongside humans, never alone.
  • Not corporate / enterprise. We are a consumer platform, even on B2B surfaces.
  • Not twee or "indie café." No chalkboard type, mustaches, hand-torn paper, or artisanal language.
  • Not a coffee brand. Coffee is one concept on our platform, not our category.
  • Not "robots replacing workers." We build so humans move up the value chain, not out of it.

Aspirational peers

The discipline we match — not direct competitors, but the brand bar in adjacent categories: SpaceX · Linear · Notion · Joe & The Juice (2024 refresh) · Onda · Sweetgreen. Each balances editorial confidence, hospitality warmth, and the appearance of being three years older than they are.

§ 02.0 · Logo system
The accent is the brand

Logo system.
The accent is the brand.

A. Wordmark
B. Clearspace
C. Monogram
D. Do & don't

The wordmark is the brand. The accent-coloring of the concept nounFuture, Coffee, Matcha — is the platform device. The brand visibly rewrites itself as it moves between concepts. "Yummy" is muted; the concept noun is loud. "Yummy" reads as a prefix; the concept noun reads as the brand. Same architecture, infinite concepts.

2.1 — Primary wordmark

Yummy Future
A · Primary · on void
Yummy Future
B · Reverse · on bone

Space Grotesk 700. The wordmark has two parts with deliberately unequal weight. "Yummy" is the platform constant — set in soft on dark surfaces (62% bone) and 50% black on light surfaces. The concept noun is the variable — always set in the concept's accent color (Future = Ignite #f4c542, Coffee = Plasma #ffd76a, Matcha = Signal #a3d977). The two never separate — "Yummy" alone is not a valid lockup, and no surface should treat them as equally loud.

Short-form rule. In nav, footer, social handles, and any tight space, the platform may be referred to as "Future." alone (with the period). Never as "Yummy." alone. The full lockup is reserved for first mention, formal contexts, and legal references.

The two-prefix rule

"Yummy" is the consumer prefix. "Future" is the platform prefix. Consumer-facing concept brands use "Yummy [Concept]" — Yummy Coffee, Yummy Matcha. Hardware SKUs and platform-facing products use "Future [SKU]" — Future Bar, Future Kiosk, Future Max. The two prefixes signal different audiences: Yummy is the warm storefront the customer walks into; Future is the platform an operator buys, an investor backs, and a press outlet covers. Never mix them — "Yummy Bar" and "Future Coffee" are both wrong.

2.2 — Variants

Yummy Future
Default · void

Reverse · bone

Mono · screen-print

Monogram · favicon

2.3 — Clearspace & minimum size

Yummy Future

Clearspace. Reserve a minimum margin equal to the cap-height of "Y" (marked "x") on all four sides. No type, image, or graphic element may enter this zone.

Minimum size. Print: 18mm wide. Digital: 110px wide. Below this threshold, switch to the Y f monogram.

2.4 — Monogram

Yf
104px
Yf
76px
Yf
52px
Yf
32px

Y f — uppercase Y, lowercase f, both in Space Grotesk 700 on Ignite ground. Used at favicon scale, app icon, tiny embroidery, social profile. Sub-brand monograms swap the lowercase letter: Y c for Coffee, Y m for Matcha.

2.5 — Do & don't

Do

Mute "Yummy" (Bone at 62% on dark, Black at 50% on light) and accent-color the concept noun (Ignite for Future, Plasma for Coffee, Signal for Matcha). Keep both words on one line. Use "Future." alone (with period) in tight short-form contexts.

Don't

Set "Yummy" at full white or full black — that breaks the prefix-vs-brand hierarchy. Color "Yummy" in the accent. Use "Yummy" alone. Stack the wordmark vertically. Outline, bevel, or add shadows.

Do

Use the Y f monogram below 110px / 18mm. Maintain the cap-height clearspace zone. Use SVG for any reproduction at print quality.

Don't

Use the wordmark below minimum size. Apply gradients or glows. Place on a busy or photographic background without a darkened plate. Italicize.

§ 03.0 · Color
One signal. Many surfaces.

Color system.
One signal. Many surfaces.

A. Palette
B. Usage ratio
C. Concept colorways
D. Accessibility

Eight colors. Ignite is the only signature accent — used sparingly, never decoratively. Plasma and Signal are concept-specific tints. Bone, Steel, Carbon, and Void carry the structural work. No additions to this palette without brand-owner approval.

3.2 — Usage ratio

Across any single surface, color appears in the following proportion:

Black · 60%
Carbon · 18%
Bone · 14%
Ignite · 6%
Concept · 2%

Black, Carbon, and Bone do the work. Ignite is the always-present accent. Plasma, Signal, and Warn appear only in their semantic role — concept-specific surfaces or corrective states.

3.3 — Concept colorway map

Brand-owner approval required

Any new concept colorway must be approved by Hao before any surface ships. The accent must hold WCAG AA against Black and against Bone, and must not clash with the existing three concepts on a shared platform surface.

3.4 — Accessibility pairings

Every approved foreground/background pairing meets WCAG AA for body text or larger.

§ 04.0 · Typography
Three families. No exceptions.

Typography. Three families.
No exceptions.

A. Type families
B. Scale
C. The accent rule
D. Numerals

Space Grotesk carries weight. Inter carries information. JetBrains Mono carries metadata. The three never blur — display is never used for body, mono is never used for prose, body is never used for telemetry. If a piece of copy doesn't have a concept noun, it doesn't get the accent treatment.

4.3 — The accent rule

Accent is semantic — never decorative

The accent color (Ignite by default, Plasma or Signal for sub-brands) is reserved for the concept noun that the brand flexes around: Future, Coffee, Matcha. Never used for emphasis. Never for product names that aren't concept categories. If you reach for the accent and the word isn't a concept, use weight (700 vs 400) instead — or rewrite the sentence.

4.4 — Numerals

Use Space Grotesk lining figures for display numbers (the metric on the Wefunder hero, the price on a menu). Use Inter tabular figures for tables and dashboards. Use JetBrains Mono for IDs, dates, store numbers, and coordinates. Numbers are part of the brand voice — they are typeset with care, never as UI chrome.

§ 05.0 · Voice & tone
Two registers. Never mixed.

Voice & tone.
Two registers. Never mixed.

A. Platform / B2B
B. Coffee Line
C. Reg CF compliance
D. Vocabulary

Platform / Investor / B2B is precise and confident. Consumer / Retail (Coffee Line) is friendly, nerdy-cute, and energetic. Never mix them on the same surface — the Wefunder page should not feature Bean·Bot, and the Palo Alto storefront should not say "brand-agnostic robotic beverage platform." Match the register to the audience.

5.1 — Platform / Investor / B2B

Used for: website homepage, investor deck, Wefunder, PRD-derived content, franchise materials, press. Register: precise, confident, platform-first. Short sentences. Numbers early. No slang, no emoji, no first-person mascot voice.

"Yummy Future is a robotic platform for the food and beverage industry. Same hardware runs a coffee shop in Palo Alto and a matcha shop in Champaign. The Champaign relaunch ran in under a week — five times the revenue of the previous menu."

5.2 — Consumer / Retail · Coffee Line

Used for: retail storefronts, consumer app, in-store menus, TikTok, retail social. Register: friendly, nerdy-cute, energetic, self-aware humor. Bean·Bot lives here. Playful but disciplined.

"Bean·Bot here. Today's matcha was whisked exactly 240 times. I counted. Cup #143 is yours, friend — please collect at the open counter."

5.3 — Reg CF compliance

Any content that could appear on Wefunder, in investor communications, or in public-facing material referencing financials must follow this table. When in doubt, have securities counsel review before publishing.

Don't saySay instead
"We will reach $X in revenue""Our Q1 2026 revenue was approximately $274K"
"Guaranteed return" / "low risk"(delete entirely — never use in Reg CF context)

"Confirmed sales of $3M+ in LOIs""Over 25 non-binding Letters of Intent for standalone units"

§ 06.0 · Photography
Human, cup, unit. In that order.

Photography. Human,
cup, unit — in order.

A. Subject priority
B. Direction rules
C. What to avoid

Photography carries the warmth that the type and color systems imply. Three subjects, in priority: human moments, the cup, the unit. The robot is the means, not the message — never lead with hardware-only imagery.

6.1 — Mood

01 · Hand receiving cup
02 · Matcha pour, top-down
03 · Storefront, golden hour
04 · Operator + robot, together
05 · Cup on counter, bokeh

6.2 — Direction rules

Subject order(1) Human moment · hand or face. (2) The cup, beautifully shot. (3) The unit, but always with a human in frame.
LightNatural, warm, slightly underexposed. Golden hour preferred. No flash.
Color gradeTonal, warm shadows, cool highlights. Should sit comfortably alongside Black/Carbon ground with Ignite accents. Avoid saturated reds, cool teals, or supernatural greens.
CompositionEditorial. Rule of thirds. Generous negative space for type overlay. Never centered-and-symmetrical for the hero shot.
PeopleReal customers and operators where possible — never stock photography. Always include hands or eyes.
Treatment in v3Slight contrast boost (+0.05) and subtle desaturation (-0.10–0.15). Hero images carry a 0–85% black gradient overlay so headline copy stays legible.

6.3 — What to avoid

Don't

Hero shots of the robot alone, lit dramatically. The robot is the means, not the message — and isolated robot photography invites the cold-vending read.

Don't

Stock photography of "happy diverse customers." Reads inauthentic and undermines the precision-and-warmth balance.

Don't

Heavy gradients, lens flares, or AI-generated imagery. The system depends on the photography being real.

Don't

Bright, clinical white-box shots. The brand reads warmer than that — even on dark surfaces.

§ 07.0 · Sub-brands
Same architecture. Infinite concepts.

Sub-brand mechanics.
Same architecture. Infinite concepts.

A. The accent device
B. Concept entry process
C. Hierarchy rule

The accent-colored concept noun is the platform mark. As Yummy Future expands into new concepts — coffee, matcha, tea, bowl — the brand visibly rewrites itself. The same architecture, never a rebrand. This is the single most important system in this guideline.

7.1 — How a new concept enters the system

01Pick the concept noun — one word, capitalized (e.g. "Matcha," "Bowl," "Tea").
02Wordmark becomes Yummy [Concept] with the new noun in its accent color.
03Pick the colorway accent — must hold WCAG AA against Black; brand-owner approval required.
04Monogram becomes Y[lowercase concept letter] — Y c for Coffee, Y m for Matcha.
05Surface kit regenerates from templates — no custom design work needed.

7.2 — Examples in context

Concept · 01
Yummy Coffee
A Yummy Future concept · Palo Alto
Concept · 02
Yummy Matcha
A Yummy Future concept · Champaign
Concept · TBD
Yummy Bowl
Future concept · awaiting approval

7.3 — The hierarchy rule

Every sub-brand surface must include the line "A Yummy Future concept" in JetBrains Mono caps at 10pt minimum. This is the platform attribution. Without it, a sub-brand reads as a standalone competitor — which defeats the platform argument.

§ 08.0 · Components

UI components.

A. Buttons
B. Tags & badges
C. Cards
D. Telemetry & data
E. Frame corners

Primary components shared across website, app, deck, and print. Square corners everywhere — the only rounded geometry is the live-status dot. Hairline 1px borders carry the visual structure; we never use shadows or gradients on UI surfaces.

8.1 — Buttons

Ignite fill = primary CTA. Hairline outline on bone = secondary. Ghost (muted soft) = tertiary. Never use Plasma or Signal for buttons — they are concept-tint surfaces, not interactive elements. Border-radius is always 0.

8.5 — Frame corners

§ 10.0 · Wefunder · Daylight
The chrome matters.

Wefunder. The chrome matters.
Same system, light ground.

A. The seam
B. Token swap
C. Slot & furniture
D. Reg CF layer
E. Ship check

Everything above is built dark by default. Wefunder is light by chrome — our page sits inside their warm-paper frame, next to the investor profile and related deals. Ship the dark Ignite palette there and the embed reads as a banner ad; ship Daylight and it reads as a document. This section is the seam — the same DOM, the same components, a different :root. Nothing in §01–§09 is repealed here; this is where it lands on someone else’s page.

The one decision that matters most

Dark embed on warm paper fights the page. The reader’s eye reads a dark rectangle inside a light column as advertising — something to scroll past, not something to read. The Daylight pairing keeps every brand device intact (asymmetric wordmark, amber concept noun, square geometry, hairline rules) and only moves the ground. Identity survives the swap; the banner-ad reading does not.

10.1 — Inheritance map · three buckets

Every brand layer goes in exactly one bucket. Memorise the buckets and the rest of this section is bookkeeping.

Inherit verbatimType families (Space Grotesk · Inter · JetBrains Mono) · asymmetric wordmark (“Yummy” muted, concept noun amber) · geometry (square corners, 1px hairlines, no shadows) · Voice Register A (§05.1) · two-prefix rule (§07). These are the coherence guarantee — changing any of them makes the page stop being ours.
AdaptSurface tokens → the Daylight pairing (10.2). Type scale → display caps at 48px on body slots; the cover still gets the full v3 hero. Body weight → Inter 400, not 300 — thin reads anemic on paper. Spacing--gutter halves to 32px, --max shrinks to 980px. Reg CF override → past tense, sourced, no projections (§05.3, and 10.4 here).
New · Wefunder-onlySlot card · telemetry strip · KPI tile · FIG.NN figure (10.3) · backed-by row (10.5) · status pills + source captions + use-of-funds bars + risks list (10.4).
Skip on the publish surfaceDark Ignite palette (review draft only) · Plasma / Signal as decorative tints (concept colors — Wefunder is platform/amber only) · frame-corner motif on every card (reserve for hero moments) · Bean·Bot voice (consumer register, forbidden here) · v3’s full editorial type scale on body slots (the column is too narrow).

10.2 — The token swap · Ignite → Daylight

Swap the token block at the top of the CSS. Never edit individual rules. Same DOM, same components, different :root — that is the whole mechanism, and it is why the two surfaces cannot drift apart.

Why amber moves

#F4C542 on warm paper measures roughly 3.1:1 — it fails WCAG AA. #c89324 measures roughly 4.6:1 — it passes. The identity is preserved: still amber, still the system accent. Only the luminance moves. This is not a second brand color; it is the same color rendered legibly against a different ground.

10.3 — The slot card and its furniture

The page is a stack of slot cards. Each carries one idea and reads as a sourced proof. Inside a card: a telemetry strip, a KPI grid, a figure, or prose — usually two of those four, never all four. Every numeric carries a source caption.

Canvas980px column · 32px gutter. This is the constraint that caps display type at 48px and forbids v3’s clamp(56–144px) hero scale on body slots.
Slot cardSteel header (mono slot name + field role) → carbon body. No nested cards. Body is Inter 400 at 14.5px / 1.62; bold the proof beat, not the adjectives.
Telemetry stripOne line above hero copy: mono mission line left, live state right. It is a Register-A signal — this page is operational, not promotional. The live dot (forest green on Daylight) is the only rounded shape on the page, and its animation honors prefers-reduced-motion: reduce.
KPI tileFour-tile grid. 3px ignite left edge. Order is fixed: sparkline → display numeral (dimmed amber) → mono label → mono source. Every .num requires a .src. No source caption = the tile cannot ship. Sparklines use four encodings only — no free-form charting.
FIG.NNSequential ID. SOURCE: label sits to the right of the figure header. The key takeaway goes in the caption, in bold amber.

10.4 — Compliance is a visual layer

Reg CF (17 CFR § 227) is not only a copy constraint on this surface — it shows up in the chrome, where the reader can see it. Three artifacts carry it.

Status pillsDRAFT · OK · BLOCK · REG CF · GREEN · SHIPPED. Visible to the reader. A BLOCK pill cannot ship — it announces an unresolved finding.
Source captionsFour citation surfaces, all mandatory: (1) KPI tile — every .num needs a .src; (2) FIG.NN — SOURCE: label right of the header; (3) inline numeric — sourced parenthetical inside the sentence; (4) tabular data — period + origin row above the table.
Use-of-funds barsDirectional weight only — PRIMARY / CORE / SUPPORT. Never a percent: stating one implies a binding allocation, and the binding artifact is Form C. Required disclaimer: // BAR LENGTHS SHOW DIRECTIONAL WEIGHT ONLY · EXACT % LIVES IN FORM C.
Risks listFixed shape: “If [event], we may [outcome].” No hedging adverbs, no reassurance clause after the outcome.
Say instead

“Q1 2026 revenue was approximately $263K.” · “25+ non-binding Letters of Intent.” · “Revenue grew 10× from Q3 2023 to Q4 2024.” · “Early-bird cap applies to first $100K invested.” Every dollar tied to a closed quarter.

Don’t say

“We will reach $X in revenue.” · “Guaranteed return” / “low risk” (delete entirely) · “We expect to be profitable by…” · “$3M+ in confirmed sales from LOIs” · “Our revenue will grow 10×” · “the next Starbucks” · “Don’t miss out” / “limited time.”

The four register tests. (1) A number appears in the first two sentences. (2) The platform argument is made, not implied. (3) Every dollar is tied to a closed quarter. (4) Securities counsel reads it without flagging. Fail any one → rewrite.

10.5 — Backed-by row

A single horizontal row of institutional backers, monochrome. One exception is allowed: Y Combinator orange #f26625 — because YC is recognisable as a logo, not as a wordmark. Every other badge is --steel background, --rule-2 border, ink text.

Badge6×10px padding, 1px border, square corners, Space Grotesk 700 at 12px.
Name + roleSpace Grotesk 600 at 13px (ink) above JetBrains Mono 9.5px (soft ink).
Spacing24px horizontal gap between entries.
Legal noteA backer logo is a record of a past investment, not a current endorsement of the offering. Do not caption it as one.

10.6 — CTA blocks

Two CTA contexts, one vocabulary: a hero pair at the top (primary fill + ghost) and a closing block at the bottom that additionally carries the wordmark and a single-line proof. Two buttons maximum, one amber fill. A third button reads as a checkout funnel; two reads as a document.

Hero pairPrimary fill + ghost. The mono microcopy underneath — From $100 · SAFE at $66M cap — is required, not decorative.
Closing blockWordmark + one-line proof + the same two buttons + a Form C reference. “Form C governs” closes every allocation claim on the page.

10.7 — Ship check · eight rules

If any of these fail, the surface stays in draft. The first is the most-violated.

1 · PaletteDaylight loaded — --black:#faf8f3, --ignite:#c89324. Ship dark and the embed reads as a banner ad.
2 · ScaleDisplay capped at 48px on body slots. Body 14.5px / 1.62 / weight 400. Mono 10–11px. v3’s full hero scale breaks the 980px column.
3 · SourcesEvery numeric carries one of the four citation surfaces. No source = the number cannot ship.
4 · Wordmark“Yummy” stays muted, the concept noun stays amber. The accent is the brand device — don’t flatten it by coloring “Yummy.”
5 · AllocationUse-of-funds bars carry no percent; the “Form C governs” disclaimer is present.
6 · VoiceRegister A — past tense, sourced, platform-first. No Bean·Bot: Wefunder is investor-facing, the mascot voice belongs in retail.

10.8 — Pipeline & sign-off

Gates run in order before publish: yummy-future-regcf-checkyummy-future-regcf-fixyummy-future-compliance-sweep → Daylight token swap → brand sanity (this section).

Sign-off chain. Claude drafts → Hao reviews Reg CF → Jack approves substance → publisher swaps Ignite to Daylight → Hao publishes. Audit logs archive in compliance-scans/.

Where the numbers come from

Every figure on the Wefunder surface resolves to the company facts base — canonical home Directus company_facts, exported to facts.yaml for consumers. Do not hand-type a figure into a slot card. If it isn’t in the facts base with an evidence tier, it isn’t ready to ship.
